ObjectivesWith the emphasis on school-based mentoring growing rapidly, and the increased need for schools to develop formal induction programmes for newly qualified teachers, the role of the mentor is critical. This course will enable you to develop knowledge and skills in the principles and practices of effective mentoring. As the course progresses, you will have the opportunity to focus more specifically on mentoring with your own teaching age range and in your chosen curriculum subject areas

Course descriptionWhat will you study?
You will study key issues including initial training, induction and assessment. In negotiation with a tutor, you will produce a portfolio comprising a series of reviews, observations, analyses, evaluations and candidate-produced documents chosen from key areas relevant to your interests and needs.
These might include topics such as: induction of a new student into the host school; student observations of the mentor and of chosen colleagues; developing student planning; issues in classroom management; student assessments of pupils; encouraging and supporting student self-evaluations; promoting and developing students’ wider involvement in school; developing and writing a school’s own induction and maintenance policy; programme and strategies; and developing colleagues as mentors.
