ObjectivesThis course offers the opportunity to combine your engineering studies with a European language. In today's world economy, language and cultural skills are an integral part of professional life. As a result, engineers with a European outlook are in great demand. During the first two years you will follow a core syllabus aimed at developing the essential skills and knowledge in the fundamentals of mechanical engineering, mathematics and management required of a professional mechanical engineer. These are integrated through laboratory sessions, design projects, group work and tutorials. In addition you will undertake language tuition at a level appropriate to your experience to prepare you for spending your third year studying in Italy. You will spend the third year studying an agreed set of mechanical engineering courses at a leading University in Italy, currently University di Cagliari and Politecnico di Torino. These are selected to mirror and complement the knowledge and skills gained during third year of the MEng. This will enable you to experience a different culture and develop international business skills in addition to taking engineering courses. In year four you will rejoin your original peer group in Sheffield where you can choose from a wide range of advanced modules. This enables you to follow the areas of your interest and to prepare for your initial career, and apply your skills in a major individual project. You will also further enhance your language skills. There is a degree of flexibility to change between our courses by the end of the first year, by agreement with the Department. This four-year course is fully accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and meets the latest requirements for entry to the profession as a Chartered Engineer. Full Chartered Engineer (CEng) status will require appropriate experience working as a graduate engineer.
