MEd Additional Support for Learning (Deaf Education)

  • Objectives The aim of this programme is to equip participants with the knowledge, understanding and skills necessary to becoming a specialist in the education of deaf children and young people in a variety of educational contexts (ie special schools, units with mainstream settings and peripatetic support services). The programme focuses on the notion of linguistic access and encourages teachers to ensure that various means are available for pupils to access the curriculum and assessment in their preferred language.
  • Entry requirements Entry Requirements Normally a good honours degree (2:1), or equivalent, in a relevant discipline. Employment or relevant educational experience will also be considered. Teaching qualification; GTC registration. Applicants should have agreement from their Local Authority to participate in a teaching placement for three weeks in the final year. Applicants should be currently working with deaf learners in an educational setting for at least two days a week.

  • Course description Learning Outcomes

    This programme will enable participants to:

        * develop critical knowledge and understanding of the differing constructions of deafness;
        * interpret audiological information and assess the provision of audiological support to the deaf child;
        * critically reflect on the nature, use and potential of signed and spoken language in deaf education and on strategies to facilitate linguistic access to curriculum and assessment;
        * develop knowledge, skills and attitudes in collaborative work with colleagues, other professionals, parents and deaf children/young people themselves.

    How You Will Be Taught

    The taught part of each of the six courses is 24 hours, with 174 hours being self study. To support this, a WebCT site is used to give access to key reading and interactive websites. Participants should have the internet at home or at work. The taught sessions are a mixture of lectures, seminars, small-group discussions and skill development. Course members are encouraged to share their experiences to relate theory to practice.

    Additional Support for Learning (ASL)

    Our suite of Additional Support for Learning programmes is carefully designed to meet the professional needs of teachers and other professionals who are involved in supporting learners with additional support needs. All our programmes have been recently revised and are delivered by staff who are experts and practitioners in their field.

    Each of our programmes can be taken as a six-course diploma and can be continued to Masters level. Participants may also choose to select a number of independent courses, as either assessed or non-assessed, for inclusion in their CPD portfolios.

    We are pleased to be able to re-introduce a Postgraduate Certificate in Additional Support for Learning: Inclusive and Special Education from session 07/08.
