  • Objectives The programme encourages the integration of theoretical and practical perspectives through work-based learning and assessment.
  • Entry requirements Participants will normally be employed as managers and have significant and relevant work experience. This experience should normally be of at least two years. Entrants should also have one of the following: -an honours degree or equivalent -a postgraduate qualification -a relevant professional qualification -substantial experience at a senior level in their organisation. Applicants who do not meet the above formal entry requirements but who can demonstrate considerable experience and motivation may be invited for interview.

  • Course description This specialist MBA is supported by a team of internationally-recognised public sector specialists so you will gain the expertise to contribute to the strategic management of public sector organisations.

    Course structure
    The programme is in three Stages: certificate, diploma and master's. During the certificate Stage you will study the main management functions, with a particular emphasis on public sector organisations including ethics and public sector values. At the diploma Stage you will take a more strategic focus and examine issues such as management of risk and innovation. Topical issues are covered in the module Current Issues in Public Management. A dissertation completes the qualification. The programme is offered on a block-release basis and can be completed in just over two years. Modules are normally delivered in two-day blocks.

    Professional accreditation
    Upon successful completion of the programme, graduates will be guaranteed the offer of Associate Member (ACMI) status or, with three years’ managerial experience, full Member (MCMI) status from the Chartered Management Institute.

    Careers
    Typically graduates move into senior management roles in public service organisations.

    Contemporary Public Management
    This module will give you a critical appreciation of public management’s contemporary social, economic and political environment. You will also explore the notion of values in public service.

    Leading the Public Enterprise
    This module focuses on applying leadership and human resource management, risk and enterprise to contemporary public management in the light of structural, leadership, legislative and regulatory change. You will reflect on the dynamics of change within public management and its implications for delivering services.

    Managing Public Money
    You will examine financial management principles and practice within public service organisations. This module focuses on the need to manage resources efficiently and effectively within a dynamic environment and to demonstrate its achievement by providing financial information. You will also reflect on the political environment and examine the pressures and impact this has on financial practice.

    Public Service Marketing
    This module will help apply marketing in a context other than the fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector - it is particularly relevant if you are working in or with experience of public services. You will examine the nature of the public service organisation and its changing role. You will cover the relevance of the marketing mix and marketing tasks specific to public service organisations.

    Public Service Management and Change
    This module will help you to develop a critical understanding of strategy development, innovation and risk in public services. You will also evaluate approaches to managerial change.

    Current Issues in Public Management
    This module will help you to develop a critical understanding of current issues in public management. You will evaluate issues such as community consultation, e-governance and public and private sector relationships, including partnerships and private finance initiatives.

    Management Research

    This module aims to provide you with knowledge of research strategies and is designed to help you understand the processes involved in conducting effective research. You will see the significance of theoretical principles in the research process And understand how important it is to present clear and credible arguments and evidence to support research design and findings.

    Dissertation
    This module integrates your learning and development as you apply your knowledge and understanding to organisational issues. You will do a major project related to a business issue of significance within an organisation, leading to a written report.
