MBA Entrepreneurship

  • Objectives The MBA in Entrepreneurship aims to combine an advanced teaching and learning programme in management with a focused and practical approach to Entrepreneurship education. The course will enable you to engage in a study of entrepreneurial individuals and organisations (including private, public and social enterprises), focusing on the interaction between entrepreneurship, management practice and the external environment. The aim of the programme is to enable you to develop entrepreneurial creativity and awareness within the context of a well-rounded management education, and you will be encouraged to apply entrepreneurial skill sets across a variety of settings. The course is underpinned by a clear and pervasive emphasis upon creativity, invention, design and innovation. You will be engaged with these processes at the outset and use them as integrative elements throughout the course. The programme will provide you with access to an expansive network of organisations across a range of industries, as well as state-of-the-art learning and enterprise development facilities. Primary among these is the UNIEI lab, which provides student entrepreneurs with bespoke infrastructure, as well as business advice and support.
  • Entry requirements The programme will be appealing to both entrepreneurs interested in developing their management skills, as well as experienced professionals looking to become more entrepreneurial.

    Course Content

You will study the following core modules in order to develop your knowledge and skills in fundamental management disciplines within the context of issues relating to entrepreneurship:

    -Accounting and Finance
    -Creative Problem Solving
    -Entrepreneurship
    -Management Information Systems
    -Management Project
    -Business Economics
    -Managing People
    -Marketing
    -Operations Management
    -Strategic Management

In addition, you must take at least two of the following modules:

    -Venture Capital
    -Social Entrepreneurship
    -Innovation Management

Please note that if two modules from Venture Capital, Social Entrepreneurship, and Innovation Management are taken, then one elective module needs to be selected. If all three modules are taken, then no elective module can be taken.

The elective subjects will permit you to concentrate in-depth on more specific subjects according to your individual interests and career requirements.

Our top class faculty includes leading specialists in finance, entrepreneurship, business ethics, corporate social responsibility, operations management, and risk and insurance. Therefore, we offer elective modules in these areas and many more.

French, German, Spanish and Japanese are offered as non-examined options for students who wish to advance their business language skills.

Please note that all module details are subject to change.

A fundamental part of your development as a manager is participation in group work. Our approach to management training is that the most effective way to accelerate learning and management skills is to work with talented peers from many different professional and cultural backgrounds, combined with close interaction with the academic staff.

Finally, you will be asked to choose to write and be assessed on either a

Management project on a business topic of your choice, or a group management project (with an individual critique/analysis).

The MBA includes the opportunity of an internship– this offers an exciting challenge and the chance to develop your potential and focus your MBA on your career goals. Your internship experience can make a big difference to your post-MBA career, and your CV stands out, showing that you can put theory into practice.

Many organisations use internships to assess the potential of new employees. Several Nottingham MBAs have been offered jobs with the business they have worked for, while others found that an internship is an ideal way of gaining exposure to a new sector.

The Nottingham internship enables you to work on a project in the UK or overseas. We work in partnership with leading multinational companies such as Alliance Boots, E.ON, Experian, and Rolls-Royce, as well as with small and medium-sized enterprises, financial services, and not-for-profit organisations, and creative industries.

Internships take place during the summer and usually last about ten weeks. You can work individually or as part of a group, and are supervised by an academic member of the Nottingham University Business School who specialises in your area. You will also have a mentor from the company you are working with.

The findings from the internship are then written up into your MBA Management Project which counts as 60-credits towards your MBA.

    Course Structure

The full-time MBA in Entrepreneurship consists of a set of core modules, a wide choice of elective modules, and a management project or group project; it is taught over one year, full-time.

The core subjects ensure that all participants study essential areas of management.

The elective modules and the management project or project allow you to build on these fundamental areas and tailor-make your own version of the Nottingham MBA.

The semester based part-time MBA is very flexible and can be spread over two to four years. This flexibility allows you to fit the MBA around your work and other commitments.

Core modules are usually offered twice during an academic year, once during the day and once in the evening.  To facilitate part-time working, most elective modules are offered in the evening every two to three years.  Some elective modules are offered in a one-week intensive course, plus project work.

Part-time course members take the same core modules and have the same choice of electives as full-time MBAs.

Each module is usually examined by assessed course work and/or a two-hour exam held after the end of the relevant semester.

Course members can usually choose up to two elective modules from the School's other MBA programmes
