Course descriptionIntroduction
This course enables you to gain Qualified Teacher Status to teach mathematics to 11-16-year-olds of all abilities in line with Department of Education and Skills standards.
The course is interesting and varied with workshops, lectures and seminars. You will learn to use information and communication technology (ICT) to support the teaching and learning of mathematics, improving your own ability to use ICT to support your studies and your professional work as a teacher.
You will study current educational developments and maintain close contact with schools throughout the course. This is a demanding course and you will have to work hard to succeed. However, the course is very interesting, enjoyable and rewarding.
Teaching and Assessment
When on teaching placement you will observe and assist experienced mathematics teachers and teach classes. You could teach mathematics to beginners, GCSE and possibly A Level groups, children or adults.
We have an extensive network of school placements throughout the region. We arrange two secondary school placements with visits to linked primary schools. Placements provide an opportunity to become involved with various aspects of school life, whether pastoral, social or academic.
You will also visit a primary school in order to gain an overall view of today's education system.
There will be a variety of assessed work, including essays and teaching packages.
Career Opportunities
Many students have a wide range of vocational experience, so career prospects are excellent. There was an exceptionally high employment rate across all PGCE subject areas according to the University's 2005/06 Destinations Survey. Some subjects achieved a 100 per cent employment rate.
