  • Academic title MA Strategic Human Resource Management
  • Course description Introduction

This is a one year course for practising managers with significant work experience at middle or senior management within HRM or a related business area. It is aimed at managers who have reached a stage in their career where they have to address issues related to the strategic direction of their organisation. The course will provide a conceptual framework in which to explore these issues. Providing as it does a higher degree qualification in a well established management area, the course enables you to enhance your career prospects and marketability in the professional practice of HRM at senior level.

    Course Content
The full course comprises three modules:

    - Strategic People Management and Development
    - Managing Culture and Change
    - Dissertation (20,000 words)

In addition to the core modules, the dissertation will be supported by a programme of research methods, and you will be invited to the annual HRM Conference which is held in April.

The course is usually a top-up to participants' existing qualifications and experience for which we will, on entry to the degree, automatically award 80 masters level credits. The remaining 100 credits required for the award of a masters degree will be attained by successful completion of the course.

    Teaching and Assessment
The assessment strategy enables you to demonstrate analytical, critical and practical skills, to show an awareness of how HRM practice is informed by theoretical presuppositions upon which analysis and critique can be exercised. Assessment is by work-based academic reports for Strategic People Management and Development and Managing Culture and Change, and a work-based academic dissertation of 20,000 words preceded by a proposal of 2,000 words. There are no formal examinations on this course.

Duration: The course is one year part-time. It is held at the Marylebone campus on four weekends each year (11.30am Friday to 1.00pm Sunday) in the months of January, April, June and September. If you do not live within commuting distance of the University, we will book you into a local hotel at an additional cost. You are expected to spend at least the same amount of additional time between the attendance blocks on personal study and completing assessments.
