Master Public Services Management

  • Objectives This new course enables you to study the complexities of public services management, an environment in which private and public partnership are increasingly playing an important role in all areas of activity. The course will examine the implications of various public services policies with respect to labour markets, welfare reforms and quality management, all of which are at the heart of public policy and management. An objective of the course is to bring together all those who are working in a wide range of organisations involved in public service, private or non-profit organisations, and provide advanced professional development and education for work in the wider public sector, eg local authorities, trusts, housing associations, transport, nongovernmental organisations (NGOs), charities, etc.
  • Entry requirements You should have a first degree, or a professional qualification recognised to be of equivalent standard to a degree, or equivalent work experience. If you do not have formal qualifications, but at least five years’ relevant work experience, you may also be considered for the course at the discretion of the course leader. If your first language is not English you require a minimum of IELTS score 6.5 or equivalent.

    The course is designed to offer the possibility of professional development for those who are either working for or with the public sector/services. It will offer a coherent programme of study in both public policy and public management. Core modules cover policy and management and some options enable you to specialise in a specific area. Some of the areas that will be studied are public finance, taxation, e-government/services, human resource management, employment and labour markets.

    Teaching and Assessment
    The teaching team includes experts in subject areas including finance, strategy, economics, e-government/services and human resources. In addition, teaching will be supplemented on occasion by external speakers and lecturers. Modules will be delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars and case study analysis, with occasional emphasis on group work. Your performance will be assessed by assignments and formal exams.
