Master Polymer Science and Engineering

  • Objectives The course offers advanced study in polymers (plastics and rubbers) for science and engineering graduates in either full-time or part-time modes. It aims to prepare you for a career in the polymer and related industries or, if already employed in the industry, to improve your effectiveness and career prospects. The programme provides hands-on learning opportunities in the Polymer Centre's laboratories and workshops. This enables full integration of the theory and practice of polymer engineering. The course aims to develop experience and understanding of the practical aspects of polymer engineering essential for those with technological careers. This will also be of great value for those in management, sales and marketing, so that they can be aware of potential opportunities, choose the appropriate materials and communicate processes effectively with those at the production end of manufacturing.
  • Entry requirements An Honours degree or equivalent in a relevant science or engineering subject. Applicants who do not have an Honours degree, but who have had significant relevant work experience will also be considered on an individual basis.
  • Academic title MSc Polymer Science and Engineering
  • Course description Course structure
The course consists of four compulsory modules, two optional modules and a project.

    Compulsory modules:

    -Fundamentals of Polymer Science
    -Principles of Polymer Engineering
    -Manufacturing and Finishing Processes
    -Research Methods

    Optional modules from:

-Formulation and Design of Polymer Materials
    -Professional and Technical Issues
    -Advanced Polymer Processing and Simulation
    -Industrial Work Experience

A project can be on any topic within the range of the course, subject to approval. The Research Methods module will prepare you for the project.

    Assessment
Assessment is on a continuous basis for most elements of the course, but a variety of techniques are employed, for example, assignments, written reports, group and individual projects, case studies, computational analysis, seminars and examination. The project is assessed by a dissertation.

    Career opportunities
This specialised degree will provide enhanced career prospects for those already employed in polymer and related industries, or those considering a move into the polymer sector, as polymers are of increasing importance in many aspects of our lives.

    Attendance & duration
    -Full-time: one year
-Part-time: two to three years, one day a week
