Master Phil-Ph.D in Food Science and Technology

  • Objectives The award of Master of Philosophy (MPhil) can be obtained through undertaking a research study at the University of Lincoln. Each student has an approved program of research during which specialist knowledge of a field is acquired and research skills are developed. The part time option is ideal for persons currently employed in the industry wishing to study for a higher degree. The research group has a wide experience in food science and technology. The main areas of expertise are in food microbiology, food analysis, sensory analysis and food processing. The group has experience in applied research with direct industry links. Past and recent grants for research have been obtained from Lincolnshire Development, the DTI and the EU.
  • Entry requirements The requirement for entry to the program is a first or second class honours degree or a higher degree.
  • Academic title M.Phil/Ph.D in Food Science and Technology
  • Course description Recent and current projects include:

        * Novel freezing and chilling technology
        * MAP of fresh fruits and vegetables
        * Antimicrobial effectiveness of wash solutions
        * Quality improvement of fruit juices
        * Browning prevention of fresh cut vegetables

    Supervision and Assessment:

    Each student will have two supervisors, with expert knowledge in their fields, assigned to them. The supervisors will monitor and support the student throughout the duration of their research project. This will take place in the form of regular meetings and seminars.

    The programme requires the presentation of a thesis and an oral examination.
