Master Modern History

  • Objectives To provide a distinctive programme suitable both for those intending to proceed to a PhD and for those who wish to study modern history at an advanced level. To encourage a broad vision in study and to escape rigid divisions of country, period or discipline
  • Entry requirements people with a first or 2:1 honours degree or overseas equivalent in a related subject. Applicants do not need to have a History first degree. Please contact the department for advice.

    - Unique location in the heart of the British administrative centre with unrivalled access to library and archival resources and easy access to resources in Europe.
    - Integration of British and European History incorporating a breadth of approaches.
    - Shared skills module taught across three MA programmes.

    Adopting a breadth of approaches to modern history (broadly defined as history since 1750), our core staff are experts in their respective fields of British and European history.

    Students will take modules worth a minimum of 180 credits.

    Compulsory core modules:
    -Historical Methods - an introduction to the theory and practice of historical research using contemporary sources; Advanced Skills for Historians – a shared skills module taught across three programmes;

    Optional modules include: Patriotism in British Politics c1870-1918; Rethinking the Age of Reform in Britain, 1780-1850;
    -Revolutions & Constitutions in Europe, c.1790-1870;
    -English Exceptions; Communications in Modern Europe;
    -The Construction of Modern Heroism, 1725-1930;
    -A Second Confessional Age? Religion & Society in Modern Europe;

    Students may also take optional modules from the Imperial History & Early Modern MA programmes, the MA in European Studies programme and/or modules offered intercollegiately by other members of the University of London.

    Dissertation: A compulsory 15,000 word dissertation based upon primary sources.

    Duration

    One year FT, two years PT, September to September.
