Master Medieval History

  • Objectives To train scholars moving into academic work after completing a BA degree but also for students who simply want to deepen their knowledge of the period.
  • Entry requirements people with a 1st or 2:1 honours degree or overseas equivalent in a related subject. Applicants do not need to have a History first degree

    - Unique location among the foundations of the medieval City of London and unrivalled access to library and archival resources.
    - Long-standing reputation as a centre of excellence in medieval history.
    - Interdisciplinary collaboration across the College in provision of teaching.

    Teaching is provided mainly by the Department of History with collaboration from the Professor of Palaeography, other staff across the School of Humanities and the Centre for Computing in the Humanities (CCH).

    Students will take modules worth a minimum of 180 credits.

    Compulsory core modules:
    Materials and Methods – examines the sources used for the study of medieval history and places them within their historiographical framework;
    Palaeography – introduces the art of analysing and reading handwriting; Medieval Latin.

    Optional modules include:
    England & the Continent in the 9th Century;
    The Foundations of English Royal Government, 800-1300;
    Magna Carta & Medieval Monarchy;
    Official & Unofficial Religion;
    The History of Medieval Women: Image & Reality;

    Dissertation:a compulsory 15,000 word dissertation based upon primary sources.

    Duration
    One year FT, two years PT, September to September.
