Master in Science in Chemical Process Technology

  • Entry requirements The normal entry requirement for applicants for this MSc programme is a minimum of a Second Class Lower (2:2) Honours Degree in a science or an engineering discipline. Students holding overseas degrees are very welcome and their degree qualifications are assessed in accordance with their referees' comments and our long established experience in working with international students. Overseas applicants will need to demonstrate their English language ability by presenting a formal English Language qualification which is acceptable to Aston University (eg. IELTS 6.5, TOEFL score of 600 or equivalent).
  • Academic title Master in Science in Chemical Process Technology
  • Course description Chemical Process Technology is a broad area that involves a lot more than chemistry. It brings together expertise in chemistry, physics, mathematics and chemical engineering, and also competences in project management, knowledge of economic and environmental aspects of process and product development. This new and exciting programme aims to provide those interested in pursuing successful careers in the chemical and process industries with the essential knowledge and skills. In addition, the course also enhances the individual’s portfolio of skills by allowing specialization in management, polymer engineering, bioenergy and bioproducts, or material and sports science.

    Outline of programme

This MSc programme takes 12 months of full-time study for completion. The course is organised on a modular basis with a total of 180 credits to qualify for an MSc degree. The taught component is made up of six core modules and four electives spread over two terms. All students will undertake a research project in the second half of the course. In addition to studying core Chemical Engineering and Process Design modules, students can choose to specialise in one of the four available options on the course. These options are:

    Chemical Process Technology

        * with Management, acquiring skills and training in chemical process management
        * with Polymer processing, acquiring skills and training in polymer processing and engineering
        * with Bioenergy and Bioproducts, acquiring skills and training on a range of biofuels and biomaterial processing
        * with Material and Sports Science, acquiring skills and training in material processing and design for sports equipment.

    Assessment

All the modules in this programme are delivered with lectures and labbased tutorials, which have a good balance between scientific methodologies and their performance in the context of broad industrial applications. Students will have sufficient practice with case studies and coursework. The teaching modules are assessed with a combination of coursework and examinations and a dissertation is required for the sixmonth, major research project.

     Career opportunities

Our MSc in Chemical Process Technology will be particularly attractive to science graduates who want to expand their career opportunities in chemical and process industries, as well as experienced graduates and professionals with an interest in process industries with specialization in management, polymer engineering, bioenergy and bioproducts or material and sports science. It will provide students with the knowledge, understanding and skills appropriate to careers in the chemical process industries.
