Master in Research in Photonic Networks

  • Entry requirements Minimum lower second class in a relevant science degree at a UK or equivalent university. Overseas applicants will also need to demonstrate English language ability (eg. IELTS 6.5, TOEFL score of 600 or equivalent).

  • Course description The course is an introduction to modern optical communications networks aimed at preparing students for academic or industrial research. A mixture of technical science modules and business modules is included.

    Outline of programme

    Our Masters by Research (MRes) programme requires six months of full-time study followed by a six-month industrially-relevant research project, which can be carried out as an industrial placement or internally at the university. Modules are:

        * Digital Transmission
        * Optical Communications System
        * Radio Systems and Personal Communication Networks
        * Introductory Programming (in Java)
        * Research Methodology
        * Research: systems, support and regulation
        * Organisations and Project Management
        * Photonic Networks
        * MRes Project.


    Assessment

    The course consists of 80 credits assessed through coursework and exams and 100 credits assessed through a research project.

    Career opportunities

    Students can progress to a PhD degree at an academic institution or to industrial research in the laboratories of major international communications companies.
