Entry requirementsApplicants should normally have, or expect to obtain, an upper 2nd class Honours Degree in an appropriate subject, or equivalent qualification. Participants whose first language is not English must also have an IELTS score of 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in each component, or TOEFL 600 (250 computer-based, at least 100 Internet-based, with a minimum banding of 20 for Writing, Listening and Reading, and 22 for Speaking), or equivalent.

Course descriptionThrough this programme, graduates gain a knowledge and understanding of the EU’s role as an actor on the international stage. The exercise of political and economic power in a globalised world is amply explored, and there is a strong policy focus.
Outline of programme
The programmes comprise taught modules and a dissertation. Modules: • Research Methods develops quantitative and qualitative research skills in accordance with ESRC norms for work in the broad field of political science, international relations and international studies.
* Governance in the EU Area focuses on the principles, mechanisms and procedures of governance at European, state, regional and local levels, and on the interactions between the different levels.
* The EU as a Global Political and Economic Power considers the roles and powers exercised by the EU as a political and economic actor in the contemporary world, with attention paid to key policy issues.
* The EU and International Relations Theory provides knowledge and understanding of different perceptions of the nature of international relations, with particular reference to Europe’s place in the world. Dissertation based on supervised study and research on a chosen topic.
Assessment
The taught modules are assessed mainly by written examination or extended essay. The taught element of the programme is complemented by a 15,000 word dissertation leading to the award of the MA.
Career opportunities
Graduate opportunities lie notably in international business or finance, in government or international organisations, in politics and journalism, or in research - whether policy-oriented or academic (usually after doctoral level research).
