  • Academic title Master in Arts in TESOL Studies
  • Course description This programme is designed for those who would like to obtain a substantial postgraduate qualification in the field of TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) early in their professional lives and who have little or no teaching experience. It builds on our long experience and the world-wide reputation of our highly successful distance learning Masters programmes for teachers of English.

    Outline of programme

    The programme comprises taught modules and a dissertation. Modules:

        * Teaching in Practice
        * Approaches to Teaching and Learning
        * Approaches to Course and Materials Design
        * Analysing Written and Spoken Discourse
        * Investigating Lexis and Grammar
        * Research Methods Dissertation based on supervised study and research on a chosen topic.

    The linchpin of the programme is the Teaching in Practice module. This is more than just teaching practice, it is an introduction to all the practical issues involved in TESOL, while at the same time offering the opportunities for participants to experiment with new ideas. The other modules represent a balance between pedagogy and linguistic theories, offering participants the opportunity to carry out in-depth investigations into aspects of both language pedagogy and theory of language use.

    Assessment

    All assessment is by written assignment, except for Teaching in Practice where teaching performance will also be assessed. Participants choose their own assignment titles, under the guidance of module tutors.
