Master in Arts in German Cultural Studies

  • Objectives The programme aims to provide graduates with a crossdisciplinary approach to the analysis of Germany’s cultural and political identity from the early 20th century to the 21st century with special emphasis on contemporary and cultural affairs since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. Based on research into cultural diversity and identity, the programme examines the linguistic, artistic and mediarelated contributions to German concepts of national and cultural identity within the context of their complex sociopolitical and historical development.   • Entry requirements All participants must have, or expect to obtain, an upper 2nd class Honours Degree in German, or equivalent qualification. Participants whose first language is not English must also have an IELTS score of 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in each component, or TOEFL 600 (250 computer-based, at least 100 Internet-based, with a minimum banding of 20 for Writing, Listening and Reading, and 22 for Speaking), or equivalent.

        * Art, Film and Literature in the Berlin Republic
        * Icons in Contemporary Art: Aspects of German Painting
        * German Language and Nationbuilding
        * Research Methods
        * Dissertation based on supervised study and research on a chosen topic.

    Assessment

    The taught modules are assessed by written examination or extended essay. The taught element of the programme is complemented by a 15,000 word dissertation leading to the award of the MA.
