ObjectivesThe MSc in Freshwater and Coastal Sciences aims to integrate ecology with hydrology and geomorphology. In particular, the course focuses on: reconstructing the past; understanding the contemporary; monitoring design; and predicting the future via modelling. Emphasis is placed on practical skills and field experience.

Together, Queen Mary and UCL (Geography Department) offer considerable multi-disciplinary expertise in aquatic systems sciences which is further complemented by staff from organisations such as the UK Environment Agency, NERC Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, and the conservation agencies.

Semester 1
Five compulsory two-week core modules and a one-week field module:
* Aquatic Systems:space and time
* Aquatic Systems: structure and functioning
* Statistics for the Biosciences
* Aquatic Monitoring
* Aquatic Modelling: explanation and prediction.
Semester 2
Four optional modules from those listed below.
Habitat option modules include:
* Streams and Rivers
* Lakes
* Estuaries and Coastal Systems
* Wetlands
* Marine and Coastal Conservation
Coursework (52.5 per cent) will be assessed via essays, practical reports and presentations. An examination (7.5 per cent) is designed to assess understanding of general issues. The research project (40 per cent) is assessed via a 12,000-15,000-word dissertation.
