  • Objectives To provide training in the historiographical and technical skills necessary for further study, but also for students who simply want to deepen their knowledge of the period

    - Unique location among the foundations of the early modern City of London and unrivalled access to library and archival resources.
    - Staff expertise in British and European history with a focus on ways in which cultural and social themes stretch across the period c1500-1800.
    - Shared skills module taught across three MA programmes.

    A rigorous and challenging introduction to early modern history at post BA level. The degree breaks down the conventional divisions between British and European history, focusing on ways in which cultural and social themes stretch across the period c1500-1800.

    Students will take modules worth a minimum of 180 credits:

    Compulsory Core Modules:

    -Approaches to Early Modern History - an introduction to the various approaches to writing the history of early modern Europe;
    -Advanced Skills for Historians – a shared skills module taught across three programmes;
    -Optional modules include:
    -Paris & Amsterdam in the 17th century;Power, Identity & Religion;Ritual in Early Modern Society;Political Thought in the British Atlantic World;Body & Society in Early Modern Europe;Religion, Science & the Production of Knowledge in Early Modern Europe;
    -People, Portraits & Things, 1660-1800. Students may also take one module from the MA in Modern History:
    -Revolutions & Constitutions in Europe;and/or one module offered intercollegiately by other members of the University of London.
    -Dissertation:a compulsory 15,000 word dissertation based upon primary sources.

    One year FT, two years PT, September to September.
