Master Computing & Security

  • Objectives This programme is for graduates in science and engineering who have prior experience of computer programming and mathematics in their first degree and who wish to obtain specialised training in computing and security. The programme will cover a broad range of concepts and practical applications of information security engineering and thus provide students with a thorough and complete understanding of the field and with practical knowledge and expertise sufficient to evaluate, design and build computer security systems using a large range of tools and techniques.
  • Entry requirements people with .1 BSc honours degree or equivalent in computer science or related subject, eg mathematics, physics/chemistry, electrical engineering, or a joint degree in two such subjects
  • Academic title MSc Computing & Security
  • Course description Programme description

-Provides theoretical and practical knowledge of a broad range of techniques for developing security solutions
-Aims to give coverage of the whole field of security and related Computing areas, rather than specialising on one area
-Enhances students' programming, analytical, critical, problem solving and transferable skills.

With the expansion of the internet and in particular web-based business, computer security solutions are increasingly required by industry. Engineers and scientists are increasingly looking for security solutions to computer systems for banking, online shopping etc. There is thus a growth in interest in advanced security methods for solving a huge range of problems across many areas. There is a large need in developing and using security methods to combat crime and terrorism. The protection of computer systems and network is a central part of every organisation.

This programme aims to address the upsurge in interest in this field and the future need for graduates in this area. The programme will prepare students for careers in industry and in academic research.

    Programme format and assessment
Eight modules assessed by written examinations. The modules may contain an obligatory coursework component. Assessment of written project. Successful completion of only the taught part of the programme (first nine months) leads to a Postgraduate Diploma, and of the whole programme to the MSc.
