Master Business Economics and Finance

  • Objectives The course aims to bring together the disciplines of business economics and finance in a form that will equip you with the skills necessary for positions of responsibility in national and international companies. The taught modules provide an in-depth knowledge of the theoretical and applied aspects of both business economics and finance as relevant to the needs of professional economists and managers. The research component introduces you to alternative research strategies and methodological issues, and provides training in the management and reporting of a research project in the area of business economics and finance.
  • Entry requirements Normally a lower second class Honours degree or equivalent in economics or one containing a significant amount of economics, such as finance, business studies or management studies. Applicants with substantial relevant professional experience will also be considered. Exemptions from specific modules will be investigated. Those without the standard requirements can attend the Graduate Diploma Course prior to enrolling on this course.

    Core modules:

    -Business Economics
    -Corporate Finance
    -Financial Risk Management
    -Quantitative Research Methods

    Optional modules (two to be selected):

    -Economics of Human Resource Management
    -Economics of European Integration
    -International Business
    -International Finance

    One of the optional modules may also be selected from another postgraduate course, subject to the course leader's approval.

    You must also undertake a dissertation of between 10,000 and 20,000 words.

    Assessment
    A variety of assessment methods are used including traditional unseen examinations, open book computer workshops, essays, written reports, in-class tests and case study presentations.

    Career opportunities
    The course is of particular interest to graduates seeking careers in national and international companies. It will also be attractive to economists and managers already in employment wishing to update and expand their knowledge within the context of business in the global economy, the new economics of human resource management, the 'new' economy and the increasing relevance of finance. In addition, the course offers a good training for those wishing to pursue further research for a PhD in the areas of business economics and finance.

    Attendance & duration
    Full-time: one year, 3 evenings a week
    Part-time (eve): two to four years, up to 2 evenings a week
