Master Advanced Computing: Mobile Computing

  • Objectives The course provides an exciting opportunity to study various mobile platforms and multimedia applications that run on mobile and Internet devices, acquire relevant skills and develop an understanding of the issues surrounding mobile technology and Internet. This course aims to integrate the Principles of Symbian OS curriculum within the course structure. Graduates are encouraged to take the Accredited Symbian Developer test on completion of the course. The mobile technology and Symbian OS system are relatively recent developments. Only during the last decade, have businesses, political organisations, lobby groups, media organisations, artists, educators and others attempted to use them as a major tool for communication.
  • Entry requirements You should have a lower second honours degree in any discipline and demonstrate an existing interest in multimedia and an acceptable level of computer literacy. Applicants are expected to have a basic C++ experience or other object-oriented programming experiences but willing to learn C++. Applications from those with no first degree but who have an appropriate relevant professional qualification or previous experience may also be considered. Acceptance on to the course will be determined following interview (telephone interviews may be arranged for those living abroad).

    The course consists of six essential modules and a final practical project.

    The modules include:

    -Web Design and Mobile Technology
    -Emerging Mobile Applications
    -Mobile and Evolving Services
    -Research and Development Skills
    -Advanced Topics in Mobile Technology

    Assessment
    Assessment methods include written reports, software development projects, presentations and examinations.

    Career opportunities
    On completion of the course, graduates will be well equipped to work in mobile applications design and development, in areas such as advertising and multimedia applications, m-commerce, entertainment and education. Typical job titles include Symbian OS C++ Software Engineer, Mobile Wireless Application Developer, and Mobile User Interface Designer.

    As mobile technology is such a rapidly expanding area of business, there is a high demand from industry for graduates of this course, and it is anticipated that the demand will rise. Graduate will be mobile technology professionals who can join a technical team
    and become immediately productive. Since this course integrates the Accredited Symbian Developer (ASD) curriculum, you are also encouraged to take the ASD test, which is an industry-standard qualification for professional smart phone software developers. The qualification is part of the Symbian Academy program and is licensed to a company called Majinate. Many companies already require this qualification.

    Attendance and duration
    Full-time: one year, 2 days a week (Mon, Tues)

    Part-time (eve): 2-4 years, one day a week (Mon or Tues)
