Master Addiction Psychology

  • Objectives The MSc in Addiction Psychology is designed for all those with an interest in addictive behaviours. The course aims to provide students with broad, up-to-date advanced scientific and academic knowledge of addiction and addictive behaviours. The course provides students with theoretical and practical knowledge relating to the main factors influencing addiction, including biological, social, cultural, psychological and economic perspectives. Students will develop skills relating to the research and assessment within addiction and aims to make a contribution to training needs of all those who have a role to play in providing services.
  • Entry requirements The minimum entry requirement is normally be a lower second-class Honours degree in the area of Health and Human Sciences. Graduates from other disciplines who have extensive relevant work experience will be considered on an individual basis.

  • Course description Course structure
    The course is organised into seven core modules, including a final research project module that spans autumn, spring and summer period. Teaching takes place in the afternoons and evenings.

    Core modules:

    -Introduction to Addiction
    -Research Methods and Statistics in Addiction
    -Consequences of Addiction
    -Non-drug Addictions and Addiction in Special Populations
    -Biological Bases of Addiction
    -Treatment Options in Addiction
    -Research Project

    Assessment
    A variety of methods are used, including unseen examination, seminar presentation, reports, essays and a dissertation.

    Attendance & duration

    Full-time: one year
    Part-time: two years

    Career opportunities
    The course provides an opportunity for career progression for those already working within the addictions or cognate areas and also provides a theoretical and practical knowledge for those wishing to pursue careers relating to addiction.
