Objectives
This postgraduate programme focuses on the development and application of advanced architectural design techniques and technology. The course has been formulated to respond to increasing competition in the professional procurement of buildings and the pursuit of architectural excellence. It offers you the opportunity to concentrate on architectural design, humanities and technology to a high level of sophistication without having to work within a single specialist approach. During this course, you will spend some time on studio-based exploration and innovation across a broad range of projects. You will also be encouraged to develop a suite of advanced communication skills.

Key facts
-This interdisciplinary programme shares modules with other postgraduate courses, including: MArch Urban Design; MArch Technology; MArch Theory and Design; and MA Architecture and Critical Theory.
-On successful completion of the first two semesters of this course, you have the option of transferring on to the second year of the Diploma in Architecture in order to gain ARB/RIBA part 2 recognition (this is subject to obtaining ARB/RIBA part 1 recognition for your prior qualifications).
-As part of its remit, the School of the Built Environment aims to develop your vocational skills and the environmentally responsible attitude necessary in today’s rapidly changing world.
-The School enjoys strong collaborative links with overseas institutions and is currently working on a number of EU-funded projects. You may have the opportunity to attend conferences, seminars and training courses both in the UK and abroad.
Course Content
Based within the School of the Built Environment, this course centres round the development and application of advanced architectural design techniques.
You will learn about cutting-edge techniques as well as current and future considerations faced by urban designers, architects and technologists, such as conservation and regeneration.
Typical modules include topics such as:
-Architectural theory and design
-Architectural design and conservation
-Urban design and regeneration
-Renewable energy technology
-Tall building design
-Computer modelling and presentation

You will spend the summer semester producing a dissertation – this will be an in-depth study of an individually determined architectural theme.
Course Structure
The MArch in Design is offered on a full-time basis over one year.
In each of the first two semesters, you will complete a major design package consisting of a studio project plus a related series of seminars.
You will also complete between two and four additional lecture/seminar modules to make up your remaining credits.
Finally, you will complete a written dissertation on the subject of your choice during the summer period at the end of the course.
