Management MRes

  • Objectives This new programme aims to provide students with: a rigorous training in research methods appropriate for doctoral studies; systematic and critical knowledge of one specific subject area of management research (such as accounting or marketing); the knowledge and skills to appreciate the growing importance of interdisciplinary research in management; skills in analysis, argument, independent thinking and effective oral and written self-expression; and transferable employment-related skills so that they become lifelong learners able to apply their knowledge and skills in a variety of contexts.

  • Course description Module details

    Compulsory course units include: Research Process 1 Literature Review; Research Process 2 Research Design; and Philosophical and Methodological Issues in Management Science.

    Candidates chooses three Qualitative Research Methods and three Quantitative Research Methods or STS Methods courses and one additional research method course which is non-assessed. Candidates on the Accounting & Finance pathway may take the Research Methods and Methodology for Accounting or Finance.

    Candidates then choose three course units from those offered by the specialist masters programmes, which will usually depend on their pathway.

    Accrediting organisations

    The course conforms to the present ESRC guidelines for Masters degrees and has ESRC recognition as a postgraduate training year in preparation for undertaking a PhD.

    Progression and assessment

    Formal assessment uses a variety of modes, balancing between ongoing examination and coursework decided by what is appropriate for the learning objectives of the individual course units. Presentations, essays, dissertation, examination, literature review, completion of log book, write-up of workshop projects, and end-of-year research design are all included.
