MA Registered Project or Thesis

  • Objectives The MA by Registered Project or Thesis offers the opportunity for individuals to propose a project or thesis of their own devising for study/research and development. It has been created to allow individuals to develop their own practices and/or theories to Masters level. Likewise, it can also provide organisations with opportunities to advance the skills and knowledge of colleagues and employees and to contribute to the further development of their own interests.
  • Entry requirements Entry requirements Prospective applicants should normally hold a good degree or experience in the appropriate subject area, supported by a portfolio of work or evidence of publication. Competence in written and spoken English is essential. Overseas applicants are expected to have a score of either IELTS 6, TOEFL 540, CBTOEFL 207 or IBTOEFL 76 unless their undergraduate course of study was undertaken in English. There is an opportunity for overseas students to enrol on the ten week Language and Culture Bridging Programme which begins in June, providing they have secured a place on an MA course the following September. This will allow for a higher score to be achieved and for students to have Art and Design specialist tutorials in preparation for Masters study. To enrol on this programme any of the following is required: IELTS 5.5, TOEFL 510, CBTOEFL 180 or IBTOEFL 64.
  • Academic title MA Registered Project or Thesis
  • Course description Course content
Projects and theses brought to successful completion so far have included Arts Curation, Decorative Arts, Design Studies, Designed Environment, Digital Futures, Fashion and Textiles, Fine Art, Creative Collaborations, Graphic Design, Performance/Live Art, Photography, Product Design, Publishing and Theatre Arts. We are however interested in any proposal from within the broad range of Art and Design subject areas if the school is able to support the proposal ideas.

The MA by registered project or thesis may also suit students who are unable to undertake a full-time taught Masters course, as a part-time route is available for study over two years. The school is able to support a variety of individual timetabling and study needs as well as the support for learning and development within a vibrant and expanding postgraduate community.

Module One: Development (120 credits, postgraduate diploma phase). Once you have successfully registered your project, the development module sees you progress towards a body of work submitted for the postgraduate diploma, accompanied by a Reflective Analysis and documented project work.

Module Two: Production (60 credits, Masters phase). The Production module culminates in a completed project and/or piece of critical writing as defined within the registered project or thesis proposal
