MA-Postgraduate Diploma-Postgraduate Certificate in Humanities

  • Objectives To provide through the compulsory core courses a coherent framework for multidisciplinary study of the humanities (including a thorough training in research skills and IT), and, through the options and dissertation, to tailor the rest of the course to the student’s needs.
  • Entry requirements Entry requirements At least a good second class Honours degree (normally an upper second) or its equivalent in a relevant discipline; some option modules may require a first degree in a related topic.

  • Course description Course modules
    Core:

    -Issues in the Humanities (Humanism, Ideology, Gender, Colonialism/Postcolonialism)
    -Research Skills (IT skills, bibliography, academic
    -writing, presentation skills)
    -Dissertation

    Optional:

    There is a large range of option modules, some designed specifically for this course, and some shared with other MAs in the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of the Social Sciences. Students may take option modules from any MA in the Arts Faculty provided they are qualified to undertake the work.

    Subject-specific pathways are available, e.g. MA in Humanities and History of Art. Other pathways include: Archaeology, American Studies, The Classical World, Economic and Social History, English, Film Studies,
    History, Medieval Studies, Medical Humanities, Modern Languages, Regional Studies, Urban Studies and Women’s Studies.

    Teaching and assessment methods
    Core modules and many options are taught in the early evening to encourage part-time participation. Most teaching is done in seminar groups. Assessment is by essays and an IT project. MA students must also complete a dissertation.
