MA-Postgraduate Diploma in Historical Archaeology

  • Objectives -to analyse processes of social and cultural change especially in the early modern and modern worlds from a material perspective -to investigate contemporary theory and practice across the range of historical archaeology -to critically engage with the range of sources (material, textual, representational, oral) available to scholars examining the archaeology of the last five hundred years from a global perspective. -to develop students’ ability to conduct independent research -to build awareness of the potential of interdisciplinary research -to enhance the career prospects of students, whether in archaeology, related or other professions, especially by equipping them with transferable skills (in written and oral communication, team-working, and source analysis) -to equip those who desire it to advance to research degrees with the skills they will need.
  • Entry requirements Entry requirements Normally a good first degree, second class or higher in Archaeology or cognate disciplines, or the equivalent for overseas or European applicants, or equivalent professional experience. International/EU students must have a level of English proficiency of 6.5 IELTS or 600 TOEFL.

    Teaching and assessment methods

    Teaching is by a combination of lecture- and seminar-based courses, field visits and an extended field-based study tour and individual research. Assessment is through essays and project work.
