MA-Postgraduate Diploma Archaeology and Landscape History
ObjectivesThis MA programme offers applicants scope to gain a full theoretical and practical foundation for independent research within landscape archaeology, seeking to equip students with knowledge of the potential and limitations of different forms of archaeological, historical and other types of evidence, and in particular to develop a critical understanding of the meaning, nature and potential of landscapes in prehistoric and historic contexts in Britain and abroad. The general aims of the programme are to: -develop an awareness of the range of approaches employed in studying and interpreting landscapes and wider social and settlement evolution across time and in specific epochs -explore the history and potential of landscape archaeology and analysis -develop analytical and written skills which will allow students to undertake critical analysis of a particular period or theme in landscape study -provide new and develop existing practical skills in the analysis and interpretation of landscapes and settlements -encourage the growth of research, communication and presentation skills suitable for independent research. -develop students’ ability to conduct independent research -promote thoughtful and ethical archaeological and research practice -build their awareness of the potential of interdisciplinary research -enhance the career prospects of students, whether in archaeology, related or other professions, especially by equipping them with transferable skills (in written and oral communication, team-working, numeracy, and IT) -equip those who desire it to advance to research degrees with the requisite skills.
Entry requirementsEntry requirements Normally a good first degree, second class or higher in Archaeology, Ancient History, History or cognate disciplines, or the equivalent for overseas or European applicants. Individual cases where the applicant has extensive relevant professional experience (3 years or more) will be considered on their merits. International/EU students must have a level of English proficiency of 6.5 IELTS or 600 TOEFL.

Teaching and assessment methods
Teaching is by a combination of lecture- and seminar-based courses, site and landscape visits, a field-based core module (centred on a current research field project), and individual research. Assessment is through essays and project work.
