MA Philosophy

  • Objectives This course will allow you to draw on your background in Philosophy to pursue the subject in greater depth at postgraduate level, and to make the transition from undergraduate study to research-based study. Although it is quite normal for students to stop at the MA stage, the course also serves as preparation for those intending to proceed to MPhil and PhD programmes, and has been designed to fit well with the current strategy of the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) to offer funding packages of 1+3 years.
  • Academic title MA Philosophy
  • Course description
    Philosophy (MA)
    Duration: 1 year full-time, 2 years part-time

    Course Content
This is a flexible MA, allowing you to choose modules on the topics you wish to study at greater depth.

You will take a core module in Research Methods in Philosophy, which is designed to prepare you for writing an MA dissertation and also to provide you with specialist training in research methods, particularly if you are aiming to proceed to MPhil or PhD study. You will also choose three modules from an approved list of modules – these cover a broad range of philosophical topics and reflect the research interests of members of the Department. Current modules include:

    • Art and the Mind
    • Meta-ethics
    • Identity
    • Perception
    • Causal Powers
    • First-Person Thought
    • The Problem of Universals
    • Free Will and Action
    • Truth and Meaning
    • Philosophy of Music
    • Essentialism
    • Normative Ethics
Please note that all module details are subject to change.

You will also complete a 10,000-15,000 word dissertation on a topic of your choice (subject to the approval of the Head of Department). This dissertation will account for a third of your MA and can be entirely tailored to reflect your interests and personal specialisms.

    Course Structure
This course can be taken on a full-time basis over 1 year (September to September) or part-time over 2 years.

You will take a 30 credits compulsory module and three 30-credit optional modules, before completing a 60-credit dissertation in your chosen specialism
