  • Objectives The publishing programme is professionally orientated, providing hands-on practical experience and enjoying a good reputation with the publishing industry. It aims to make you employable through developing your relationship with publishers.
  • Entry requirements Entry requirements A good first degree in a subject related to your chosen area of publishing. Overseas students whose first language is not English will show both written and oral evidence of proficiency through an IELTS score of at least 6.5.

  • Course description General programme structure

    The industry has indicated that because of the diverse nature of publishing, a first degree in any subject is preferable, followed by a professional publishing course. The programme provides graduates from any discipline with the necessary practical skills and knowledge required by the industry. You are encouraged to develop those personal skills deemed essential to successful publishing, including teamwork, judgement and the exercise of initiative. These elements are embedded in all four of the assessed modules which include both practical and written outcomes.

    This practicality enables you to appreciate the roles of the many trades and professions which constitute publishing. Printings, editing, commissioning, rights and marketing are all interrelated. Technology brings many processes together and to be successful in a contemporary publishing environment requires knowledge of many tasks. A fleet of dedicated Macintosh computers enables you to function and innovate within the context of a modern publishing industry. Therefore the programme focuses on skills, training and an intellectual underpinning that will enhance the understanding of the task of publishing and its future markets.

    -The publishing process - undertaking different publishing roles as an intern with the University of Plymouth Press
    -Publishing skills: discrimination and good practice - practical publication design project, which reflects the evaluation of content according to readership.
    -Publishing: product and business - a case study carried out with a publisher of your choice
    -Professional publishing practice - a small-scale project with a publisher that is completed at a publishing house
