We also ask that you complete an aptitude paper designed to assess your potential in the key areas of • writing • current affairs knowledge • general enthusiasm for and interest in the course If you are not resident in the UK, we will arrange a suitable alternative. For example, we may interview you by phone and provide a paper for you to complete and return. We base our selection criteria on your relevant experience and potential for development.

  • Course description The newspaper and broadcasting industries are going through a period of change and development. Because of the rapid development of digital media, journalists have to work across traditional boundaries.

    As well as traditional print skills such as gathering information with notebooks or recorders, the next generation of journalists must also operate recording equipment for radio and television. You need to be able to rapidly edit material, so it can be viewed by your audience electronically. This includes providing material for a news organisation’s website, interactive TV or mobile service.

    This course provides you with the skills and knowledge for a career in a modern news environment. This includes learning to write for newspapers but also filming developing stories and using multimedia.

    You have direct contact with many of the main news organisations operating in the UK, including the Press Association, the premier news gathering agency, the BBC and ITV.

    You work with leading industry practitioners and academics from print journalism to broadcasting. You also meet senior editors who are working in regional and national news and can go on valuable placement training to develop skills and build contacts.

    You may wish to enter the world of news reporting, news presentation or foreign reporting in the print or broadcasting industries. But It is important that new entrants to the industry have the ability to operate across all areas • print • television • radio • on-line, as journalists often move from one area to another.

    You gain the skills needed throughout the industry and sought by employers, which can lead to many career opportunities.
