  • Objectives The course will enhance the career development of practitioners and providers in a wide range of organisational settings, by developing generic and specific professional and academic knowledge, understanding and skills. It is especially relevant to those presently making or intending to establish a career in education or related fields.
  • Entry requirements Entry Requirements:

    Entrants to the programme will usually hold a good honours degree and relevant professional experience. However, applicants without this level of qualification or professional experience will be considered on individual merit. Credit exemption can be made for holders of the NPQH or other appropriate professional qualifications.

  • Course description This course replaces the previous MA in Education Leadership and Management by addressing a broader range of educational issues relevant to practitioners who work in a variety of roles at all levels and sectors. Applications are welcomed from those in teaching or management positions in education or related fields, or from those who wish to pursue a career in education.

    Course Content

    There are two main strands to the module content of the programme, allowing students to focus on Management and Policy in Education or Teaching and Learning. Students may also take any combination of modules.

    There are three required core modules:

        * Reflecting on Professional Practice
        * Conducting Research in Education and
        * Contemporary Issues in Education.

    There are 11 optional modules:

        * Educational Effectiveness and Improvement
        * Policy Making in Education
        * Leading and Managing Professional Practice
        * Lifelong Learning
        * Psychology and Education in the Early Years
        * Theories of Learning
        * New Technologies in Education
        * Leading and Managing in Education
        * Curriculum and Assessment in Education
        * Gender and Education
        * Independent Study

    The optional modules offered will depend on student demand and programme resources. The Postgraduate Certificate involves two core and one optional modules, and the Postgraduate Diploma has three core and three optional modules. The MA requires an additional 20,000-word research dissertation completed under guided supervision.

    How To Study

    The MA in Educational Studies will be delivered primarily via lectures, tutorials, seminars and workshops. It is likely that some content will involve use of discussion boards or other information technology. It is possible some optional modules can be completed by independent study. The Postgraduate Certificate and Diploma stages will be assessed by assignments, which may take a variety of forms. Completion of the full MA will require submission of a 20,000-word dissertation on an approved topic relevant to the programme.
