MA Landscape Studies

  • Objectives The MA in Landscape Studies offers opportunities for students from a variety of backgrounds to gain basic knowledge, understanding and skills in Landscape Architecture. The programme does not provide a full professional training in Landscape Architecture and is not accredited by the Landscape Institute. It does, however, allow you to explore aspects of landscape architecture and also to tailor your studies, through a dissertation, to pursue landscape topics that are of particular interest and relevance to you. It is possible for students who successfully complete the coursework to join the second year of the professionally accredited MA Landscape Architecture, with the approval of the Head of Department.
  • Entry requirements Entry requirements Good undergraduate honours degree, ideally in a design discipline. Our standard English language requirements for overseas students are: IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 575 (paper based) with TWE 4.5, or TOEFL 232 (computer based).

    -Introduction to Landscape Design (a series of design projects, visual and CAD projects and workshops)
    -Landscape Histories
    -Theories and Practices
    -Introduction to Planting Design
    -Ecological Design and Management
    -Advanced Planting Design
    -Introduction to Landscape Construction (including use of CAD)
    -Advanced Construction Design
    -Social Aspects of Design
    -Integrated Design Project
    -Introduction to Landscape Planning
    -Research Methods
    -UK field trips (one residential) and a summer European field trip
    -Candidates for the MA also write a 10,000 word Dissertatio
