MA Landscape Research (1 + 3)

  • Objectives To provide advanced level social science research training relevant to the needs of researchers in the field of landscape planning. To develop general research and related transferable skills and the ability to apply them in the field of landscape research It is also the preparation for a PhD following the 1+3 route and has been recognised by the ESRC as meeting the research training requirements for doctoral study.

  • Course description Course content

    The course aims to provide a rounded research training background for students across the broad range of research topics related to landscape planning. It is based on the MA in Planning Research and about 75 per cent of the content is drawn from this course.

    The remaining compulsory and optional units provide an overview of the multi-disciplinary nature of landscape studies, as well as subject-specific material related to your own research area.

    The course will give you:

    -An understanding of the history and philosophical traditions of social science research and appreciation of its relevance in the landscape field.
    -Knowledge and understanding of qualitative and quantitative research methods.
    -The ability to communicate effectively using a range of media including information technology.
    -Project management skills.
    -An understanding of the context and process of policy-making and the role of research in the policy environment.
    -Specific knowledge of current social science issues in landscape research.
    -Specialised substantive knowledge relevant to your research area.
    -The ability to complete a supervised research study
