The MA in Insurance Studies allows you to advance your conceptual understanding of insurance and provides trnasferable skills that are normally part of undergraduate degrees or professional insurance qualifications. The programme provides you with appropriate training in research methods and introduces current research on various risk topics. The supervised dissertation allows you to develop your own independent research using concepts and techniques from the theoretical and methodological modules.

    Course Content
    You will study the following core modules in order to develop your knowledge and skills relating to Insurance Studies:

    -Corporate Financial Strategy
    -Legal and Social Issues in Insurance
    -Managerial Economics
    -Research Methods (with Part IIA)
    -Theory of Risk and Insurance
    -In addition, you will be able to choose from a broad range of elective modules:

    -Derivative Investment
    -Financial Econometrics
    -Fixed Interest Investment
    -Industrial Economics

    -Venture Capital and Corporate Restructuring

    Over the summer period towards the end of the course, you will undertake a 60-credit supervised 20,000-word dissertation on a subject of your choice relating to Insurance Studies.

    The supervised dissertation allows you to develop your own independent research using concepts and techniques from the theoretical and methodological modules.

    Course Structure

    The MA in Insurance Studies is taught on a full-time basis over one year.

    During this time, you must accumulate 180 credits to qualify for the award of MA. 120 credits come from modules taught and examined during two 15-week semesters.

    Each taught module typically consists of ten 2 or 3 hour sessions. Assessment is a combination of individual essay or group project and written examination.

    The remaining 60 credits of this course are allocated to an independent dissertation, which is completed over the summer period for submission in September.
