ObjectivesThis programme provides the opportunity to study the changing circumstances of literatures of modernity. Drawing on a wide range of texts, topics and authors, the programme engages with different theoretical issues as well as archival research and interdisciplinary approaches to literature (eg. Literature and law). The programme reflects the research interests of staff and covers many under-researched aspects of literary studies. It therefore offers the opportunity for you to identify a topic to be developed for future PhD research. The emphasis on choice in this programme means that you select two option modules (which could be on 19th-century literature, gender, language, creative writing or film) enabling you to explore a new area or to develop an existing interest, in order to enrich your understanding of modern and contemporary literature.
Entry requirementsEntry Requirement: We welcome applications from anyone with an upper second-class degree or better (or equivalent) from a relevant subject area: English, Gender Studies, History, Arts and Humanities, or Social Sciences. If you have not taken a first degree recently, but feel you have equivalent qualifications or experience, please contact us and discuss your application. You will need to send a sample essay in English of at least 2,000 words together with two references. You must fulfil the University of Hull's requirements as regards proficiency in English language (for instance, IELTS 6 or above).

Course descriptionThe literature explored extends from the early twentieth century to the present day (from modernism to cyberpunk). Students are encouraged to consider the relationship between ideas of the ‘modern' and the ‘contemporary', as well as such contested terms as 'posthuman' and 'postmodern'.
You should choose this course if you enjoy modern literature from the beginning of the 20th century to the present day (1900 to 2000 onwards), and want to explore it more fully than you could at undergraduate level. This programme is a good choice for those who are interested in pursuing a career in teaching, publishing or the media. A diploma can be awarded on successful completion of the taught modules without a dissertation; the programme is available part-time over two years, but not by distance learning.
