MA in Military History

  • Entry requirements The MA in Military History is aimed primarily at History graduates (as well as those in a parallel discipline such as Politics and International Studies) who wish to specialise in Military History either for employment purposes or in advance of Postdoctoral research. The programme is designed to provide students with a combination of research skills and advanced knowledge in the political, strategic and cultural history of war and human conflict.

  • Course description COURSE CONTENT

    Themes of the programme will include the culture of warfare, the formation of armies and navies and weaponry, military strategy and defence and the politics of warfare from medieval to modern times. The programme comprises 180 credits made up of 60 credits of taught Core modules, 60 credits of taught Optional modules and 60 credits of a Dissertation. Student choice decides the topic of the Dissertation and the learning and teaching strategy of the Dissertation is independent research supported by the methodological Core module of the programme in combination with personal supervision sessions. Students are allocated a personal Supervisor.

    -War and Peace in Early Modern Central Europe

    -India and the Two World Wars
    -Winston Churchill's Second World War as History
    -British Defence Policy since 1945
     
    Further module information
    Students will also be able to substitute one Optional module on the programme with one chosen from the full range of MA options available in the History Department.

    Assessment
    Learning portfolios, essays, research design tasks, group projects, documentary analysis, text analysis and one Dissertation (15,000 words).

    Special features
    The History Department has a strong research group on the staff working in the area of military history and the department runs a very active Research Seminar programme for its staff and postgraduate students which its MA students are encouraged to attend.
