MA in Creative Writing

  • Academic title MA in Creative Writing
  • Course description Introduction

The MA in Creative Writing is currently in its second year and is designed to enable students to produce a professional-quality portfolio of work in their specialist genre: poetry, the short story, or the novel. Practical skills are taught by members of staff who are themselves professional writers.

Workshops and seminars are complemented by the Philip Larkin Centre's programme of readings by visiting poets and novelists and student-led events. The programme for 2007-08 includes poets Matthew Sweeney, Craig Raine and August Kleinzahler, novelist M. J. Hyland and poet and Poetry Review editor Fiona Sampson. Recent visitors have included Andrew Motion, Ciaran Carson, Kathryn Gray, Alan Hollinghurst, Jackie Kay, Toby Litt, Nicholas Murray, Carol Rumens, Anne Stevenson, and John Hartley Williams. The programme also features talks by publishers and agents concerned with the marketing of creative work.

"The University of Hull has a long and distinguished tradition of building bridges between its English Department and writers (from the local area andelsewhere). Its distinguished Creative Writing MA programme is a right and proper development of this connection, and deserves to meet with every success."

Andrew Motion, Poet Laureate and Patron of the Philip Larkin Centre for Creative Writing and the MA in Creative Writing.
