MA Human Resource Management

  • Objectives The programme is designed to develop professional skills, knowledge and understanding across a core range of human resource management fields of practice.
  • Entry requirements The normal entry requirement is a first degree in a business-related subject, the Postgraduate Certificate in Management or an equivalent professional qualification. Applicants without a degree but with appropriate work experience may also be eligible but will normally be required to undertake the Postgraduate Certificate in Management before admission.

  • Course description Course structure
    You will be introduced to the practice areas of resourcing, development and employee relations. You will also attend a residential skills conference and there may be an opportunity to attend a national Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) conference. In addition, you will have the opportunity to study performance management and an option module, and complete a dissertation on a topic of your choice.

    Professional accreditation
    This MA is accredited by the CIPD. You will join the CIPD at enrolment and receive licentiate membership on successful completion of the programme. In order to get full Graduate Membership, you would also need to complete a programme such as the Postgraduate Certificate in Management.

    Typically graduates progress to more senior roles in human resource management.

    Strategy, Integration and Contemporary Themes in HRM
    This module will look at how a human resources department can provide knowledge, awareness and understanding of how to align and integrate the human resource (HR) function and activities with the rest of the business at a strategic and line manager level.

    Performance Management
    Performance Management is a strategic approach to managing an organisation to improve organisational effectiveness. This module examines the continuous development of an organisation’s strategic capabilities and those of individuals and teams. You will explore the role of personnel and development practitioners – how they help managers and individuals develop performance management skills and processes through leadership development, motivational techniques, team development and effective communication. You will also explore the links to an organisation’s reward strategies.

    Human Resource Development
    This module helps you to critical examine the relevant concepts for HR development, and to develop professional competence within it. This module is relevant if you are a personnel practitioner or have line manager responsibility for developing staff.

    Employee Resourcing in an International Context
    This module focuses on an organisation’s HRM systems and processes for staffing - from the HR planning process, recruiting and selecting, managing aspects of individual and team performance, to eventual release. Few organisations can ignore the international context, and the implications of international and cross-cultural operations. This module provides you with the professional knowledge, understanding and competence to contribute to your organisation’s success. You will learn how to make business-related and ethically-informed decisions about employee resourcing in a national and international context.

    Employee Relations and Employment Law
    Managing employees’ different skills, competencies and attributes remains an important part of achieving an organisation’s competitive advantage. This module will help you understand the importance of managing diversity in achieving organisational objectives. You will examine various conceptual approaches to inequality, looking at organisational culture, labour markets, and employment structures and systems. You will examine the nature of the employment relationship, including current employment law and its changing nature within a wider framework, eg the EU.

    Business Ethics
    Business operates in a marketplace where increasingly ethics and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) are seen as essential consideration. Companies of all sizes increasingly recognise the significance of being switched on to business ethics and CSR.

    Equality and Diversity
    In spite of decades of legislation, discrimination, under-representation and disadvantage continue to affect social groups in contemporary workplaces. You will explores definitions of equality and look at the rationales for pursuing equality in work. This module also gives you a critical understanding of the sources of inequality and of organisational practices which may help to create greater equality.

    Management Research
    This module aims to provide you with knowledge of research strategies and is designed to help you understand the processes involved in conducting effective research. You will see the significance of theoretical principles in the research process And understand how important it is to present clear and credible arguments and evidence to support research design and findings.

    Dissertation
    This module integrates your learning and development as you apply your knowledge and understanding to organisational issues. You will do a major project related to a business issue of significance within an organisation, leading to a written report.
