MA French Studies (Research Track)

  • Objectives To enhance understanding of specific aspects of French culture and society. To enhance language abilities, analytical and research skills. To prepare students for rigorous independent research at MPhil or PhD levels. To provide a postgraduate qualification in French Studies reflecting broader and deeper knowledge than that acquired at undergraduate level.

    Students take core modules in one of four specialist areas (Medieval Studies; 20th-century Literature; Gender Studies; History and Politics), then choose between two flexible pathways to make up 180 credits. Options include:

    -Project work
    -Research methods
    -Standard or extended dissertation

    Teaching
    Modules are taught in English or French, as appropriate

    Assessment
    -Examination (oral and written),
    -coursework ( including essays, translations and a variety of analytical exercises),
    -projects/dissertation
