  • Course description Programme

This MA course provides a stimulated environment for professional and personal development, to highly motivated, committed and talented graduates from a range of Fine Art disciplines.

It provides an educational experience which builds on the notion of individualised practice in Fine Art, extending it to promote in each student a vigorous critical and contextual understanding of their practice as a whole. The course offers practice and theory in painting, sculpture, printmaking, video, drawing, photography, and combinations in a multi-disciplinary format.

The course is structured around a flexible timetable of studio tutorials, formal group critiques, seminars and visiting artists' programmes. Students are challenged on presentation, installation, curational and representational issues in their practice. They work in studio space alongside research students and are supported by workshops and facilities for all disciplines, including lens-based and electronic media.

Staff are practising artists and most exhibit. Individual members of the Fine Art team have exhibited recently in Germany, the Netherlands, Japan and Australia, and in London and at large regional centres.
The course consists of taught modules and continuously assessed studio work. In the second semester for full-time or second year for part-time, students complete a major piece of writing.
Studio space is provided. Students have access to all workshops - wood, metal, clay, printmaking, photographic and digital/computer related facilities.

The MA course culminates in a final graduating show, and students exhibit their practice on an on-going basis from year one. They have also achieved awards from regional galleries, as well as exhibiting regionally and internationally.

    Career opportunities

Some graduates practice professionally as artists, others undertake research or teach; some apply their skills and learning within a wider context, for example art therapy, curation, arts administration, media and public relations, publishing and arts- related residencies. The MA is also suitable as a foundation course for students preparing for PhD research. The content of the course hones students? skills in self criticism, management, organisation, communication and analysis, invaluable in a range of Fine Art professions.
