  • Entry requirements Entry Requirements:First degree or postgraduate degree in a business, accounting, or media related subject or related professional experience.
  • Course description Brief Overview:

        * The MA in Film Producing is the only Film Producing course in Wales and one of only a few in the UK .
        * The Film Producing modules are taught by Dewi Griffiths, founder of Garland Stone Productions, a film and TV drama production company specialising in genre projects and producer of ’ High Stakes’, currently in post-production.
        * Supporting BBC online materials may also be available.

    Course Content

    Film copyright and IPR

    Analysis of the IPR (intellectual property rights) of film. Film IPR covers both pre- and post-production processes and is fundamental to successful production. The main areas of study may include copyright and clearances. Students will investigate clearance procedures for artistic and literary copyright production.

    Understanding Film Finance

    Topics covered include: constructing a finance plan; pre-sales; finance timing; tax-based funding; sale and leaseback; recoupment planning; investment levels; profit share.

    Understanding Film Producing

    An analysis of the various aspects of film producing that covers planning, scheduling, film unit production management, health and safety, and project management, including project management at post-production.

    Entrepreneurial Studies

    Consideration and discussion of a variety of contemporary issues in the field of media-related entrepreneurial development from a strategic and managerial point of view.

    Business Planning

    Explains the theories and processes of small business planning and enables candidates to convert their own business ideas into effective business plans for start-up or expansion of production companies.

    Research Methods

    Critical appraisal of the use and value of research in a management and/or professional development context.

    Masters Project

    A significant piece of student-directed learning, based on a detailed investigation into a scenario centred on the film business that may be hypothetical or related to an actual project.

    For example:

    What You Will Learn – Understand and comment upon short films experimental and creative credentials and possibilities.

    Task – Consider a case study (as supplied).

    Reading & Other Content – Online journals/multi-media/e-books.

    Check What I Know: Discussion Forum – Sharing of problems and solutions with peers and online tutor.

    Project Submission – Submit assignment/short film to tutor.

    Career prospects

    The Film Academy is working in association with Dragon International Studios, a $180 million film studio complex, similar in size and projected importance to Hollywood. Graduates will be uniquely positioned to take advantage of this special working relationship. The first stage of the studios, ‘Dragon Plus’, is scheduled to open in 2006.

    The course will enable candidates to enter the film, television and media industries and/or equip them with the skills to set up their own production companies.
