  • Objectives This Masters programme is suitable for recently qualified and intending teachers of English as a foreign language. It aims to develop your professional practice and further your career in English language teaching at home or overseas. The programme takes an essentially practical approach, focusing on the language classroom and linking theory and recent research to your current and future classroom practice.
  • Practical experience You should normally have a good first degree. International students will need IELTS 6 with no less than 6 in the writing skill, or a pass in the York St John Masters entry test, which is conducted at some partnerinstitutions.

    Programme of study
    The programme comprises four taught modules and a dissertation.

    Module 1: Practical English Language Teaching is taught intensively at the beginning of the programme. It provides an overview of the sociocultural context of English language teaching in today's world. You will also gain a solid grounding in practical techniques and theoretical concepts that contribute to current practice in the profession. If you already have a DELTA or Diploma in TESOL (or equivalent) you will be awarded the relevant credits for this module and will not be required to attend.

    Module 2: Second Language Acquisition provides an overview of the main aspects of second language acquisition by examining key theoretical positions and research findings. You will have the opportunity to examine how theories shape our view of language learning and teaching and impact on the way courses are delivered.

    Module 3: Language Teaching Methodology examines the development of language teaching methodology and explores the issues that have generated, and continue to generate, debate within the profession. It provides an opportunity for you to re-examine your own experiences of language learning and teaching in the light of current thinking in the discipline.

    Module 4: Classroom Language Research provides an overview of research related specifically to language classrooms and will give you a deeper understanding of the processes and outcomes of different classroom practices, giving you greater confidence to experiment in your own teaching. The module will also raise your awareness of research methodology issues that will be applicable to your own research.

    Module 5: Dissertation on a topic that you will agree with your supervisor. This module is an opportunity for you to explore in depth a specific aspect of English language teaching and focus on an area of interest or particular branch of English language teaching. You will gain experience in formulating ideas and hypotheses, devising sound research methodology, collecting and evaluating data, and presenting your findings in a dissertation of 10-12,000 words.

    International students whose first language is not English will also have the benefit of additional classes in English for Academic Purposes in their first term.

    Attendance
    The programme is designed to be studied either full-time over 12 months or part-time (through evening classes or day release) over a maximum of five years. If you are unable to complete the Masters degree, you may work for the intermediate award of Postgraduate Diploma in English Language Teaching.
    The programme has a September or January start date.

    Assessment
    Your assessments will include a language teaching portfolio, essays, assignments, presentations, practical research projects and a dissertation. There are no formal examinations
