MA English Language

  • Objectives This MA may be studied full time or part time. Having completed 120 credits of taught modules students are eligible for a postgraduate diploma and may progress to the MA dissertation. The programme is taught in distance learning mode.

    Students will acquire reflective insights into the structure of the English Language, how language works at text level and how Linguistics can help to understand the process of Second Language Acquisition. A module on research methods will prepare students for the dissertation. The topic of the dissertation is selected in consultation with the tutors, and focuses on research questions in linguistics applied to the English Language. The following modules are offered on the programme:

    -The Structure of English
    -Text Linguistics
    -Second Language Acquisition
    -Research Methods in Linguistics
    -Dissertation

    Teaching and learning
    A study guide will be provided, including directed reading and lecture notes. Materials will be made available online wherever possible. Students will be asked to prepare practical analyses of texts as outlined in the study guide. Students will have access to their tutors and to discussion groups via the online conferencing system of the University (Blackboard). There will be continuous assessment throughout the year and a final essay for each module.

    Candidates who wish to improve their English before the programme starts will be offered a place in our pre-sessional EFL courses during the summer (not included in the MA fees).

    Entry requirements
    The normal entry requirement is an upper second class honours degree in English Language and/or Linguistics. Candidates with EITHER a degree in some other relevant discipline, OR a lower second class degree and substantial professional experience of using the English Language, may also be considered. Non native speakers of English must normally have an IELTS score of 6.5 or above (7.0 in writing), or the equivalent in some other generally accepted award.
