MA Early Modern Culture: History, Literature and Theatre

  • Objectives 'The world is turned upside down' reads a ballad of 1646, one of the many texts to document the radical cultural and political change that Britain witnessed between the Reformation and the Glorious Revolution. On Reading's MA, 'Early Modern Culture: History, Literature and Theatre' you will explore these changes, by examining texts as varied as Renaissance drama, Civil War tracts and Restoration political diaries, and themes as divers as travel and colonialism, the growth of London and theories of allegiance and dissent. By the end of your year's study (two years part-time), you will be able to assess the historical impact of writings that helped to shape British society, politics and culture.

  • Course description The course

    The course is 12 months in duration for full-time students, (24 months part-time).

    Students take modules in topics as diverse as early modern midwifery, Thomas Hobbes, or The Beggar's Opera as well as training in research skills, methods and theories. Assessment is through essays, practical research exercises, and a 20,000 word dissertation.

    Staff

    The MA is taught by members of the History, English, Politics and Classics departments, all of whom are also involved in the Early Modern Research Centre.
