MA Design: MultiMedia and Graphics

  • Entry requirements Entry Requirements Applicants will normally hold a good honours degree (at least 2:1 or above) in electronic media or digital/new media design, or a related design discipline such as graphics. Practising professionals with vocational, rather than academic experience may be considered. All applicants are expected to present a portfolio of appropriate creative work at interview.

  • Course description This is a practice based programme in creative design using digital media. Students joining this programme should already be proficient in the use of software for any of the following purposes: web design multimedia 3D modelling and animation graphics or print based design.

    Contextual studies in design theory will underpin the production of practical design work. Students are likely to develop their technical skills enormously during this course, but this will be through practice or tutorial support rather than formal software training. The main emphasis of the programme is on exploring an aspect of design thinking using one or more digital media as the main tool.

    Samples of some past MA titles to give an indication of scope and range:

    Bringing calligraphy to the screen - a series of experiments in digital calligraphy, exploring how well a computer can achieve the same quality of line and marks on computer screen as an expert calligrapher can with pen and ink.

    How an understanding of the physiology of the eye can help designers to produce more effective work by responding directly to the way the human brain interprets images. (This project has now progressed to Doctor of Philosophy study).

    A practical investigation into how the design, layout and structure of an interface can influence the communication and retention of knowledge in educational multimedia.

    Students undertake a series of studio based modules of negotiated content, based upon individual research and professional goals. Self-directed learning is supported by practical and theoretical lectures, critiques and seminar presentations. At masters level students will present a dissertation or case study which supports their portfolio of creative work.

    This MA operates in close collaboration with MA Illustration and Design and MA 3D Design Innovation. This can allow for the combination of two or more specialist media disciplines if desired.

    Course Content

    Stage 1
    Postgraduate Certificate (PgC) 60 credits

        * Design: Multimedia and Graphics 1

    This practical and theoretical module enables students to explore aspects of electronic media design pertinent to their own academic and vocational interests, based upon a negotiated 'statement of intent' or rationale.

    Stage 2
    Postgraduate Diploma (PgD) 60 credits

        * Design: Multimedia and Graphics 2

    Building upon the experiences at certificate stage, a second thirty credit module allows further development of electronic media skills through both practical and theoretical research. A second (thirty credit) theory module explores the techniques and effective application of visual communication as it applies to electronic media and other specialist design disciplines.

    Stage 3
    Masters (MA) 60 credits

        * Design: Multimedia and Graphics 3

    Within a sixty credit module, students produce a portfolio of innovative, creative work which has evolved from the visual and theoretical research fostered at stages one and two. This will be supported by a dissertation or case study either based upon the practical and research outcomes, or the historical or contemporary contexts from which the work has evolved.

    Teaching and Assessment

    Students undertake a series of studio based modules of negotiated content, based upon individual research and professional goals. Self-directed learning is supported by practical and theoretical lectures, critiques and seminar presentations. At masters level students will present a dissertation or case study which supports their portfolio of creative work.

    Work Experience

    Students are recommended to seek membership of appropriate professional bodies, such as the Chartered Society of Designers, though this is not a mandatory requirements.

    Career Opportunities

    The type of career likely to be sought by postgraduates with this award includes: multimedia designer; web designer; digital illustrator or animator; or perhaps as a broad based graphic designer. The award will also enhance career opportunities within further and higher education.

    Interview Selection Criteria
    We interview all suitably qualified applicants or, in the case of overseas students, invite you to send slides, CD's web address or other evidence of you creative ability and experience.

    You will have a guided tour of the facility and, of course, can ask any questions you want. You may like to bring your parents along for the tour part of the day. If they have not already been to one of our open days. We prefer to tell you decision, and how we regard your work, at the end of your interview.

    Overseas students are welcomed and there is a specialised department to assist with applications, academic support, pastoral care and making your move to the United Kingdom and university education trouble-free and enjoyable.

    Among the qualities sought at the interview, which is usually informal, are evidence of your creative ability, passion for design, a desire to work hard, an eagerness to learn and an attitude to push the boundaries of creativeness and invention.

    The programme has up to date modern studios with computer suites facilities which include the latest computers and software. The studios are modern and open plan in the centrally located �Design Building' in the centre of the city.
