Course description
The MA by Research in History provides the opportunity to engage in independent study and research by writing a dissertation of 25,000 to 30,000 words. This piece of original research will be informed by an appropriate methodological and theoretical framework, and will indicate a firm grasp of the relevant historiography of primary and secondary sources. The research topic will be determined by the student in consultation with the dissertation supervisor.
At the outset of the course, a series of weekly seminars will provide students with an introduction to research in history and will focus on developing knowledge of the range of theories, methodologies and critical approaches that currently inform research in historical studies. Only when the proposal is satisfactorily completed will the student proceed to researching and writing the dissertation.
Course Content
There will be an introductory Researching History taught module for one term, before proceeding to the dissertation.
How To Study
The programme consists of two elements, the compulsory core module of 12 two-hour weekly meetings in the first term, during which the dissertation proposal will take shape. Once this is satisfactorily completed, the student proceeds to researching and writing the dissertation. Its content, development and structure will be determined by the student in regular consultation with the dissertation supervisor.
Career prospects
The module will provide an excellent basis for further research in history at MPhil and PhD level. Those not intending to pursue further research will discover that the research skills they gain will qualify them for a range of employment opportunities in the arts, industry, the media, administration
in the private and public sectors, and further education.
