MA Advancing Practice

Objectives
You'll be encouraged to develop project management skills in order to facilitate collaborative working and multi-professional practice. You'll focus on an area of practice which needs to be developed and work through this during the course.

Entry requirements
Applicants should be graduates from a health or social care background. Qualified health or social care professionals who can provide evidence of the ability to work at postgraduate level are also welcome to apply.

Course description
MA Advancing Practice
This course is aimed at health and social care professionals who wish to develop their own sphere of practice. It promotes the development of reflective skills, enabling you to undertake a leadership role in innovation, implementation and the evaluation of practice.
Course structure
Years 1 and 2 combine core and specific modules with a practice portfolio which requires you to implement a change in your area of practice. This is supported through an emphasis on evidence-based approaches. In Year 3 you will complete a dissertation based upon evaluation of your development in practice.

The enhanced personal and professional skills you'll develop mean you'll be ideally suited for a role in leading, implementing and evaluating advances in practice.

Year 1
Evidence-based Practice
The evidence-based practice module develops skills in studying at master’s level, enabling you to make the transition to postgraduate study. It also introduces you to the key concept of evidence-based practice within a health and social care setting. Throughout the module you will develop practical skills in searching literature, critically evaluating and managing change. You will be able to focus these skills to your own specialist area of practice within the assignment.
Health & Social Care in Context
This module explores the substance of relevant health and social care policies, and also the key factors impacting on the policy and decision making process. In particular, this module explores the impact of economic, political, technological, social and cultural factors.
Advanced Personal Effectiveness in Leadership
This module is designed to integrate the NHS Leadership Qualities Framework and uses leadership diagnostic tools to help you asses yourself and to develop a personal action plan to enhance your leadership capability.
Year 2
Designing & Managing Research Projects
This module will provide you with the knowledge and skills to design and manage relevant quantitative and qualitative research projects. The content focuses on key aspects and issues of designing studies and analysing quantitative and qualitative data. It addresses scientific and ethical credibility aspects of both research paradigms. The module includes key lectures, small group work, practical exercises and peer group presentations. It also offers structured distance learning through the Blackboard virtual learning environment.
Advancing Practice Portfolio
This module enables you to present your practice project in a structured and logical format. Your portfolio will be a comprehensive account of assessing, planning and implementing your project plan set out in the Evidence-based Practice module.
Year 3
Evaluating Practice
This module concludes the MA Advancing Practice. You will develop skills in evaluating practice, and gain knowledge and experience of developing and advancing your practice.
