LLM in Law

  • Objectives The School of Law offers a number of Masters programmes that permit you to focus your studies on particular aspects of the law. However, by combining the module units from the Justice, European Law and International Law programmes, you may obtain a general LLM. If you do not have a particular preference for one of the three subject specialisations offered, enrolling on the general programme may be the more attractive and flexible option for you. By enrolling on the general programme, you will gain the opportunity to cover a broad range of legal subjects. The purpose of the programme is to provide you with opportunities to engage with, to understand and to evaluate key conceptual debates in law, to consider the role of law in its socio-legal and its political context, and to provide you with the opportunities to focus on key points of contention and debate within each of your chosen modules. As a general Law programme, you are given the flexibility to select four modules from any of those available on the specialist programmes (see module lists below). In addition, you will complete a dissertation in a topic of particular interest to you. Any topic within the broad range of the research specialisations of members of staff may be the subject matter for a dissertation on the general Law programme. Please see the School's research pages for details of the research interests.
  • Entry requirements Typical entry requirements Applicants should normally possess a good first degree (First or Second class or equivalent) awarded by a UK university or recognised overseas institution. In addition, students whose first language is not English will be expected to have achieved a minimum of IELTS 6.5.

  • Course description LLM in Law Module overview

Teaching is primarily by interactive seminars in which you will be encouraged to adopt a critical attitude to the elements of each subject you are studying. Success in the development of a profound understanding of the relevant law and its underlying concepts depends on sophisticated and wide-ranging independent research and a willingness to look beyond primary legal sources into the underlying theories and rationale of the English and other legal systems. Students are expected to offer fresh insights into legal problems and to address the tensions within and among the underlying legal theories.

Students select their modules from the following list (for more detail on these modules see the corresponding entries on the European Law, International Law and Justice LLMs). Students can combine any of these modules (subject to timetabling restrictions):

Modules in the area of European Law:
    -EC Environmental Policy and Law
-Law and Policy of EU External Trade
-EC Employment Law and Social Policy
    -European Public Law

Modules in the area of International Law:
    -The Law of International Organisations
    -International Human Rights
    -Law of Armed Conflict
    -International Trade
    -International Criminal Law

Modules in the area of Justice:
    -Theories of Justice
    -Criminal Justice System
    -Law, Society and Social Control
    -Administrative Justice
    -Civil Justice
    -Youth Justice

These subjects are offered from year to year and are dependent on student demand. You will also complete a dissertation on any subject that is within the wide range of teaching and research interests of members of the School. A dissertation can therefore be taken in one of the above subjects that a student has not studied on this programme or in a broad range of other academic legal subjects. Dissertation students are expected to bring an original perspective and to show a level of independent scholarship in their chosen subject of study.

    Programme length
    12 months full-time, 24 months part-time
